In the green rainforests of Peninsular Malaysia, a new plant called Thismia malayana has been found. This special plant, known as a type of fairy lantern, has grabbed the attention of plant experts and nature lovers because of both its unique way of living and its delicate beauty.

The Thismia malayana is part of a rare group of plants that don’t make their own food from sunlight like most plants. Instead, these plants get their nutrients by extracting them from fungi in the soil.

Imagine a network of fungi, called mycorrhizae, that connects with tree roots. These fungi help trees absorb water and nutrients from the soil. In return, the tree provides the fungi with sugars produced through photosynthesis. This teamwork is crucial for both the fungi and the trees to remain healthy and grow.

Fairy lantern acts as a parasite without returning anything

The Thismia malayana has discovered how to exploit this process. Instead of participating in the exchange, it acts as a parasite. It sucks carbon resources from the fungi without giving anything in return. This clever adaptation allows it to survive in the dark forest floor where photosynthesis is difficult.

“Despite its small size, Thismia malayana is very sensitive to environmental changes and has been classified as Vulnerable according to the IUCN Red List criteria,” explains lead researcher Dr. Siti-Munirah Mat Yunoh from the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM).

This tiny plant, less than an inch long, is usually hidden among leaf litter, near tree roots or decaying logs. Its rare and elusive nature makes it a true find for those lucky enough to discover it.

This fairy lantern plant has been found in two different places: the lowlands of the Gunung Angsi Forest Reserve in Negeri Sembilan and the hilly forests of Gunung Benom in Pahang.

Risks and threats to the fairy lantern plant

Even though the fairy lantern plant has adapted well to its special niche, it faces major threats to its survival. This newly discovered plant is found only in a few specific locations.

It is also very sensitive to environmental changes. Activities such as hiking and trampling can easily harm or destroy these delicate plants, putting their existence at serious risk. These factors show the urgent need to protect and preserve this vulnerable species and its habitat.

“Its limited distribution and the potential threat from trampling due to its proximity to hiking trails underscore the importance of continued conservation efforts,” said Dr. Siti-Munirah.

Finding the fairy lantern plant is proof of how everything in nature is connected. It reminds us that every species, no matter how small, helps keep the natural world in balance, as reported by Earth.com.
