Israel’s Mossad secret service is sending agents to Athens, Greece to investigate a bombing attack that took place on Friday in an apartment in Athens’ Ampelokipoi neighborhood.

The Israeli agents are investigating whether the target of the bomb was the embassy of Israel in Athens rather than the apartment.

The explosion that killed one man and severely injured a woman was initially thought to be the result of a natural gas leak. However, it was soon determined that it was a bombing attack, bringing the threat of terrorism back into the spotlight for Greece’s authorities.

Israel’s notorious intelligence agency, Mossad, is expected to send a team of agents to the Greek capital to investigate the incident, as authorities fear there is more to it than meets the eye.

Given their expertise

Israel Mossad’s involvement is based on the possibility that the intended target of the suspected terrorist attack may have been the Israeli embassy in Psychiko, Athens, as a response to the ongoing war in Gaza, Lebanon, and the attacks from Iran.

The Mossad, known for its meticulous and thorough approach to each case it deals with, will likely gather as much information as possible about the case that shocked Athens.

Given their expertise on such matters, they are expected to assist Greek authorities in a gesture that demonstrates the excellent relations between Greece and Israel despite the ongoing war.

The team of agents, expected to arrive separately from different countries to maintain a low profile, will stay in Athens for as long as necessary to complete investigations.

The Greek National Intelligence Service (EYP) and the Anti-Terrorist Service of the Greek Police have likely shared the evidence they collected from the destructed apartment with their Israeli counterparts.

Not the first time Israeli agents operate in Greece

This collaboration between Greek and Israeli intelligence agencies is not unprecedented. In March 2023, a joint operation involving the EYP, the Anti-Terrorist Department of the Greek Police, and Israel’s Mossad led to the arrest of two Pakistani nationals accused of planning an attack on the Jewish synagogue in Monastiraki in central Athens.

The alleged plot was reportedly coordinated by Iran.

Man arrested ahead of Israel’s Mossad arrival in Athens

Late on Friday, the Anti-Terrorism Department of the Greek police arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the explosion at an apartment in Ampelokipoi, Athens.

The suspect voluntarily presented himself to authorities and was subsequently taken into custody.

According to reports, he is believed to be the partner of a woman who had received keys to the apartment where the explosion took place in the early hours of Friday. The individual that was arrested is expected to appear before a prosecutor in Athens in the coming days, though his exact role in the incident remains unclear.
