Netflix has dropped the trailer for season 2 of Squid Game, one of the streaming service’s most popular shows ever. In the YouTube post, Netflix wrote: “There’s no stopping the game,” with the show tipped to debut on Netflix on December 26th.
Season 2 of Netflix’s Squid Game sees the return of writer, director, and producer, Hwang Dong-hyuk, and is set three years after the events of season 1.
South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae is also tipped to return for the show’s second season. Jae won one of the series’ six Emmys for his lead role as Gi-hun and will return as player 456.
What will season 2 be about?
One synopsis for the show says, “Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.” It was added that Gi-hun “gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind.”
The main plot of the show is also expected to be about Gi-hun finding out who the people behind the dystopian games are and putting an end to them.
There are other returning cast members tipped to make an appearance in Netflix’s Squid Game season 2.
Some of these returning actors include Gong Yoo, the salesman who recruits competitors, Wi Ha-Joon an undercover detective, and Lee Byung-hun who portrays the masked puppet master.
Netflix announced Squid Game will end with season 3 in July
Squid Game was Netflix’s biggest-ever launch in 2021. The dystopian Korean show was viewed by 111 million accounts in the first month it was released, overcoming the viewership of other hit shows such as Bridgerton at release.
However, Netflix has announced that Squid Game will end with season 3, which will be released at some point in 2025.
The show’s worldwide popularity and subsequent success were somewhat unexpected, as it was originally meant to be a one-season show. Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote a letter before the production of season 2 started, echoing this feeling, saying, “it almost felt surreal” being back in the world of the show.
It is hard to describe just how much of a global phenomenon Squid Game became when it made its debut on Netflix in September 2021.
The show became the first non-English series nominated for the Outstanding Drama category at the Emmy Awards, and it was nominated for 14 awards. Some of the wins included the aforementioned Outstanding Lead Actor, which went to Jung-jae, and Top Director, which went to Dong-hyuk.
It also helped cement South Korea as a worldwide entertainment powerhouse, joining acts such as BTS and the movie Parasite as pop culture staples worldwide.
