As the 2024 election looms closer, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has made further pledges to Ukraine. Many analysts consider this move to indicate a lack of confidence in Joe Biden’s re-election.
It is a move that serves as insurance for Zelensky. Trump has repeatedly said that, if reelected ,he will continue his “America First” policy, which would hinder Ukraine’s arms support from the United States.
Many analysts also consider Trump to have a good relationship with Putin. This is why there is growing speculation that he would allow Putin to keep large areas of Ukraine.
20 Countries pledged continuous support to Ukraine, says Antony Blinken
Antony Blinken explained that Ukraine is on its way to standing on its own feet in military terms. He also noted that 20 countries are committed to supporting Ukraine. This was announced following the NATO summit in Washington.
Secretary Antony Blinken addressed the possibility of Donald Trump winning the election. He expressed his fear of a severe cut in support to Ukraine under a hypothetical Trump administration.
Trump has criticized Biden’s support of Ukraine
Donald Trump has criticized continued US support of Ukraine. In June, Trump publicly stated that “He (Zelensky) just left four days ago with $60 billion, and he gets home, and he announces that he needs another $60 billion. It never ends.”
His running mate, JD Vance has also led Republican efforts to block economic assistance to Ukraine. This public stance of the republican candidates is of concern to Ukraine’s allies.
The most extreme concern clearly comes from Europe. Many European nations rely on the US and NATO to guarantee their security. Trump’s last administration was proof of not being close to his allies and provoking tensions within NATO. It seems the America First policy will not change.
Trump and Zelensky had a phone call
After having a phone call with Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Zelensky took to social media to talk about their conversation.
Zelensky posted on X saying, “I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support for protecting our nation’s freedom and independence.” It is expected the two men will meet again.
Trump also commented on the phone call on Truth Social. The former president said that he promised Zelensky to “end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families.”
This seems to have caused Antony Blinken to comment on US-Ukraine relations. Blinken spoke to US policymakers at a Security Forum in Colorado.
He mentioned that a new administration would have to consider existing strong backing for Ukraine in Congress from both parties.
