As the 2024 US Presidential election heats up, the Democrats have pledged an investment of $15 million in seven swing states. This pledge comes as a response to the Republican National Convention, which enters its second day on Tuesday, July 16th in Milwaukee.
The aim of this investment is to allow the Democratic Party to have more field offices and bolster democratic staff so as to ultimately boost President Biden’s reelection hopes.
Democratic field offices in 7 swing states will see an investment boost
Democratic field offices are local offices established by the democratic party during election campaigns. These offices coordinate and mobilize local efforts for democratic candidates. They recruit volunteers, plan events, and distribute materials in hopes of winning the presidency for a candidate.
Despite these functions, their most successful strategy is community building. Democratic field offices look to build and strengthen already existing relations with community leaders. They look for community leaders to help their cause.
The Democrats will add to the 217 existing democratic field offices in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
How will the Democrats distribute investment in the 7 swing states?
Democrats have clearly shifted their focus to the swing states that might be leaning towards voting for Donald Trump. This is why the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has chosen to invest $3 million in Wisconsin.
Other swing states that will see significant investment are Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Nevada. These three states will see almost $2 million each. Additionally, the DNC announced that $1.5 million will be invested in Arizona, and $1.2 million will be destined for North Carolina and Georgia.
This strategy starts to make sense when the latest presidential polls are evaluated. According to ABC’s 538 polls, Donald Trump is leading the race in that state with 44.1 percent of voter intention. The gap is less significant in Wisconsin. Trump leads at 43.3 percent, but President Biden is not far behind at 42.1 percent.
This is more likely than not the reason why the DNC has decided to heavily invest in Wisconsin. It is a crucial swing state that the Biden campaign cannot afford to lose.
Tensions within the Democratic Party over swing state strategies
It is no secret that President Biden’s public appearances over the last few months have been less than stellar. This has caused tensions to increase within the Democratic party.
Questions around Joe Biden’s capability have risen from top Democrat lawmakers. This is evident that almost 20 high-profile democrats have publicly called on Joe Biden to step down from the race.
Despite Joe Biden’s cognitive concerns, Democrat officials still expect the election to be extremely close. The DNC, however, recognizes that the dynamic of the election has changed after Trump’s assassination attempt.
This is reflected in Yolanda Bejarano’s strategy in Arizona. Bejarano is the chair of the Arizona Democratic Party and confirmed the 15th campaign office in the state. The Democrats are attempting to win this election with a much more hands-on approach.
