The Dutch woman who went missing a few days ago on Greece’s island of Samos was found dead on Wednesday afternoon.
The unfortunate woman had been missing since last Thursday, August 22nd, when she was last known to have gone for a hike.
According to the local Samos Voice website, the Dutch woman was found dead in an area between Pyrgaki and Gymnasio.
A large team of local as well as Dutch volunteers along with search and rescue personnel had been on a mission to locate the woman. According to the same report, it was a member of the Dutch team who found the body of the woman.
At an earlier stage of the search, the cell phone of the Dutch woman had been found. This led the search and rescue teams to focus their efforts on the particular area where she was ultimately found.
The body of the Dutch woman was identified near the Panagia Spiliani Monastery.
How did the Dutch woman go missing on Greece’s Samos?
The 65-year-old Dutch woman went missing on August 22nd after going on a hike around the area where she was staying.
According to local media Samos Voice, the woman had told a friend of hers that she was planning to go for a walk around the Tunnel of Eupalinos, also known as the Eupalinian Aqueduct and then return to Pythagoreio, where she was staying at a hotel.
A rescue team from the Greek police, the local fire brigade, and a group of volunteers, along with a team of Dutch experts who offered their assistance, began their search after being informed by a friend that she had been unable to come into contact with the missing Dutch woman following repeated attempts.
The friend reported that the missing woman had not returned from the hike and seemed to have switched off her phone.
Earlier this summer, in June, another Dutch national went missing on the island of Samos, only to be found dead shortly after.
The 74-year-old Dutchman had been missing, when he disappeared while hiking between the areas of Limnionas and Klima in the southwestern part of Samos.
Other foreign nationals missing in Greece
Also in June, a British national was found dead at the Old Port on the beautiful island of Spetses, a popular tourist destination only a couple of hours away from Athens.
The unfortunate man was only 44 years old and had visited the island to take part in the Classic Regatta that was taking place on the island at that time.
A few weeks later, a 67-year-old German tourist went missing on Crete. Unfortunately, the German man was found dead later on, as well.
In July, a young man from South Africa, who was working in one of the boat companies on the island, disappeared after he went for a swim. He was found dead days later.
Another man from Canada is also missing in Greece’s northern town of Litochoro near Mount Olympus. The man from Mississauga has been missing in Greece for weeks since July 12th.
