Fidias Panayiotou, the newly-elected Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and popular Youtuber was congratulated by Elon Musk, it was revealed on Saturday.
Fidias couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw a post from his beloved Elon Musk.
The message congratulated him on being elected to the European Parliament as one of the six MEPs from Cyprus, and quoted a short documentary that Fidias produced a few days ago explaining how he decided to run for the European Parliament and was eventually elected, in a shocking result for Cyprus’ political landscape.
The Cypriot YouTuber posted a video on TikTok on Saturday explaining in Greek how happy and amazed he was with Musk’s congratulatory message.
Still in bed and undressed, the controversial Cypriot figure showed how Musk’s post was already attracting millions of views. ”Millions of people are going to see us explaining the phenomenon of this election and what happened in Cyprus” Fidias told his followers on TikTok.
”I am shocked. I couldn’t have gotten any better news as I woke up” he added with a huge smile on his face.
Fidias is a controversial figure in the European Parliament and definitely in Cyprus, as he has thousands of fans and supporters but also attracts a lot of criticism for his unconventional style.
He has admitted publicly that he has no idea how politics work and has not decided which political group he is going to join in the Parliament. On Saturday he posted a poll on Instagram, X, and other social media platforms, asking his followers whether he should vote for or against Ursula von der Leyen, as she goes for a second term as head of the European Commission.
Who is Fidias, whom Elon Musk congratulated?
Fidias Panayiotou is only 24 years old and he is a successful YouTuber from Cyprus. In 2023 he became globally known for waiting for weeks until he managed to hug Elon Musk, whom he deeply admires.
The independent candidate overturned predictions and polls during June’s EU elections, placing himself third, after the two major parties of Cyprus, conservative DISY and left-wing AKEL.
Fidias, the son of a Greek Orthodox priest, has built a career on TikTok and YouTube, amassing hundreds of thousands of followers.
His English-language YouTube channel has gathered more than 2.6 million subscribers since he began posting five years ago. The young man from Meniko, a village in the Nicosia District, was catapulted to global fame by embarking on a mission to hug Elon Musk.
