As Former President Donald Trump took the stage to deliver his speech in Milwaukee at the Republican National Convention, he accepted the nomination for the presidency.
Former President Trump started his address by saying, “Together we will launch a new era of safety, prosperity, and freedom for citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed. The discord and division in our society must be healed. We must heal it quickly. As Americans, we are bound together by a single fate and a shared destiny. We rise together or we fall apart.”
Former President Trump delivered his speech and paid tribute to the victim of the shooting
Before delivering his speech, President Trump paid tribute to fireman Corey Comperatore, who was killed at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania last week. Trump had Comperatore’s fireman gear on the stage and stood beside it as he asked for a moment of silence.
During the week, President Trump had decided against delivering a previously written 20-page speech at the RNC. The former President opted for recounting the events that almost led to his untimely death.
For context, Presidential Candidate Donald Trump was looking at an immigration chart when a bullet pierced his ear. He was shot by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
“I felt very safe, I had God on my side”
Trump explained that when he was turning to look at the chart, he heard a loud noise that whizzed past his ear. The former president says that he felt something hit his ear very hard.
The former President described his thought process as “Wow, it must’ve been a bullet”. He then described the scene as being one out of a Quentin Tarantino movie.
The former President moved his hand towards his ear and “blood was everywhere.” He then said that even though the scene was gruesome he felt very safe because he had “God on his side”
The former president expressed to the crowd that he was not supposed to be with them tonight. He finished recounting the incident by explaining his iconic picture, just after being shot. Trump said that it was his way of letting the crowd know that he was okay. He also meant the gesture as a sign of strength.
Trump praised the Secret Service but called for the director to resign
Former President Trump praised the secret service agents who protected him but called for the director to resign over the attempt on his life.
Trump aimed a great deal of his speech towards Director Kimberly Cheatle. He argued that lawmakers have called the failed assassination attempt “a collection of security failures.”
Kimberly has taken severe criticism from both Democrats and Republicans. Politicians in both parties have expressed their concerns over the circumstances that led to the attempt on Trump’s life.
