This year, people have the opportunity to live luxuriously on Mykonos by paying only a fraction of what visitors paid last year on accommodation.
According to a report by Mykonos Live TV, tourism activity on the island of the winds is on a slump this time even though we are at the beginning of the high season. Locals attribute it to reports of exorbitant prices for services on several occasions, while others credit the decline to the effect of overtourism.
It is true that in the summer of 2023 there were plenty of pictures from Mykonos of overcrowded beaches and busy streets in the main town, but most believe the low number of arrivals on the island so far is due to high prices.
Hotel and villa owners take it upon themselves
Staying in a luxurious villa or suite on Mykonos is considered by many to be mostly for the rich. It is the dream of many that only few can afford. However, while last summer it was hard to find a luxurious place to stay, this year, occupancy is much lower.
This has resulted in owners of such places offering accommodation at significantly lower prices with the aim of persuading tourists to choose Mykonos for their holiday. This is an opportunity for those who want to feel rich for a few days to rent a place at a fraction of the cost.
For instance, a newly built one-bedroom villa with a brand new private pool, private outdoor jacuzzi, and stunning views of Psarrou Bay rents for around $250 (€230) per night instead of around $1,000 (€925) as was the case last year. This is less than a third of the price.
In the area of Klouvas near the beach of Ftelia, for a luxury suite of 56 sq.m. with one bedroom, private outdoor swimming pool, terrace with sunbeds and outdoor dining area, as well as a living room with a well equipped kitchen, dining area, and high quality bathroom amenities, rental price is around $260 (€240) per night.
According to Mykonos Live TV, people who know the market say that a five-bedroom villa that was rented for €2,000 per night last year can be found for €500 per night this summer if you get in touch with the owner by phone. That amounts to only a fourth of last year’s price.
Mykonos is not only for the rich
Mykonos is branded as a place for the rich and famous. This is, however, simply not true. There are many rooms on the island offering accommodation at reasonable rates. The same applies to dining. While there are plenty of expensive restaurants with exceptional menus, one can enjoy the traditional taverns that offer Greek dishes and delicious Mykonian delicacies, such as the spicy kopanisti or the local cold cut, louza.
Overall, whatever the hype is and despite the warnings of exorbitant prices, Mykonos is one of the most beautiful Greek islands that should be on everyone’s bucket list, and if you happen to bump into one of the many movie stars that frequent the island, it would be all the more memorable.
