After hours of speculation, Israel has confirmed they successfully killed Yahya Sinwar, the architect of the October 7 attack last year. The IDF announced on Thursday morning that Sinwar was one of three Hamas militants killed during an IDF operation in Gaza.
The statement indicated that Sinwar was “responsible for the murder and abduction of many Israelis,” adding that “Yahya Sinwar was eliminated after hiding for the past year behind the civilian population of Gaza, both above and below ground in Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip.”
In a previous statement, the IDF had said, “At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed,” and added that there were no signs of hostages at the site where the operation took place. Now, Sinwar’s death has been officially confirmed by the IDF.

By successfully killing one of the masterminds behind the October 7 attack, the IDF delivered a symbolic victory for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who remains under pressure to secure the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza.
Israel has already killed many members of Hamas’s leadership during the war, primarily through targeted assassinations across the Middle East. These operations have been carried out in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran, demonstrating the Mossad’s efficiency in executing such missions.

When Hamas chose Sinwar as the leader of its political wing, it was seen as a show of defiance and resilience. The group appointed Sinwar to this leadership role after its former leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated on July 31, 2024.
Sinwar’s death may force Hamas to negotiate a deal that could end the year-long conflict in war-torn Gaza. Recently, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that a ceasefire deal with Gaza is 90 percent complete, and Sinwar’s death could be the final piece needed to close the remaining gap.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised the IDF for killing the Hamas leader, stating that Yahya Sinwar was “responsible for heinous acts of terrorism against Israeli civilians, citizens of other countries, and the murder of thousands of innocent people.”
Herzog added, “His evil actions were committed in the name of terror, bloodshed, and destabilizing the Middle East.”
