A man from Mississauga, Canada has been missing in Greece for weeks. The 38-year-old Filip Ziaja was visiting Greece in July whilst working remotely for a tech company as a software engineer.
The man is believed to have been missing since July 12th even though there have been accounts of people who claim to have since seen him. Filip was officially declared missing by his family to Canadian and Greek authorities on July 26th.
The last location Filip was known by his family to have been was northern Greece. More specifically, Filip was staying at an apartment he rented through Airbnb in Thessaloniki, the country’s second-largest city and capital of the Central Macedonia region of northern Greece.
His family told authorities that, before he even set off for Greece, his plans had included visiting the town of Litochoro near Mount Olympus.
Where the man from Canada went missing
Litochoro is located at the foothills of Mount Olympus and is a popular spot both for those who wish to hike on the mountain of the gods and also for those who wish to visit the seaside resorts of the regional unit of Pieria.
The family of the man from Canada has told authorities that they have received messages on their Facebook account from people informing them they had seen a man who they believe was their son in the towns of Platamon and Palaios Panteleimon.
These towns are popular among visitors of the broader area and attract thousands of tourists from northern Greece and abroad every year. Unfortunately, these accounts have not been verified, as there is no CCTV footage or other forms of identification.
According to Canada’s CTV News, Filip was expected to stay in Greece whilst completing some work remotely. He was then scheduled to return to Canada by September after spending some time in Poland.
The family is urging anyone who knows anything about their son to inform authorities in Greece or send their information to their dedicated email address at: bringfiliphome@gmail.com.
Canada man not the only one missing in Greece
The search in Greece for missing American Albert Calibet, who went missing during a hike on Amorgos earlier this summer, recently unsuccessfully came to an end.
The retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy went missing on June 11th. At the time, the island was experiencing an extreme heat wave, with temperatures as high as 36 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit).
The 59-year-old never returned from the hike, and his family—along with friends and volunteers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department—did their best to locate the unfortunate man.
The entire family had gone to Amorgos to assist local authorities and residents in the search, but this was unfortunately without any positive results.
