Day four of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and Greece was represented in a series of sports by various athletes. There was a mix of some disappointment and moments of success, but the fourth day of the Olympics is now over with more action and excitement to come.

In Men’s Basketball, Greece played against one of the strongest basketball teams of the world, that of Spain. The result was unfortunate for Greece as the national team lost to Spain, 84-77.

Among the highlights of the game was, obviously, Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek Freak led Greece’s national team with yet another impressive performance.

Giannis scored 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and provided three assists. However—and despite the strong effort of the entire team—Greece was (again) unable to overcome the consistent scoring of the Spaniards. This unfortunate loss puts Greece in a really precarious position if the blue and whites want their Olympic dreams to continue.

Now, Greece desperately needs to win against Australia in their next game. This might give the nation a chance of advancing to the knockout stages.

Greece on Day 4 of the Olympics had more to offer

Basketball, however, was not the only exciting spectacle of the Olympics that people in Greece followed today. In rowing, and more specifically in Men’s Single Sculls Quarterfinals, Greece’s champion Stefanos Ntouskos successfully advanced to the semi-finals. He finished third in the Quarterfinal number 3, demonstrating his rowing skills and determination to achieve something big this year.

In swimming, and more precisely in the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay category,
Greece’s Dimitris Markos, Konstantinos Englezakis, Konstantinos Stamou, and Andreas Vazaios competed in Heat 2 and gave their best.

However, they did not manage to qualify for the finals. Their performance was excellent, but they faced stiff competition. This year’s Olympic Games are not proving easy for Greece to demonstrate its athletic excellence in relation to the competition. The Greek team finished fifth, behind the British, Australians, Chinese, and Italians.

In tennis, Greece’s female champion and idol Maria Sakkari competed in the Women’s Singles Third Round. There, Sakkari played against Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine. Unfortunately, Sakkari lost 2-1 sets.

Greece beats Montenegro in water polo

An exciting game took place on Monday evening at the Paris Olympics in Men’s Water Polo, too. Greece faced the always-competitive Montenegro and secured a thrilling win in penalties.

The game was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. Montenegro won the first period 4-2 with Greece’s scorers being Genidounias, who scored the first goal of the match, and Kalogeropoulos.

The second and third periods unfolded with the two teams desperately trying to score. However, Montenegro retained its lead with 7-5 and 9-8.

The fourth period was the most fascinating of them all, as Greece managed to overturn the score to 11-12, following more goals from Genidounias and Kalogeropoulos. However, two seconds before the end of the fourth period, Montenegro equalized the score with a goal from Radovic, bringing the total to 12-12.

This brought the two Mediterranean teams to penalties, and Greece managed to win the game 4-5 with an overall score of 16-17.

The game was part of the Olympic Games Group A of the preliminary round, and Greece is a part of that. Earlier today, Italy won Croatia 14-11, and the USA won Romania 14-8.
