Lefkada is a popular Greek island known for its beaches, particularly Porto Katsiki and Egremni. However, there is a beach near Lefkada you don’t want to miss, and that is Agios Nikolaos, a breathtaking island that consists of a single beach.

The stunning “island of Sikelianos” or Agios Nikolaos is, in its entirety, one beach. The thin strip of golden stand extends out into the pristine waters of the Ionian Sea, making Agios Nikolaos a unique location.

The island presents a narrow strip of sand with turquoise waters lapping the shores on each side of the beach.

The only structure you will find on Agios Nikolaos is a chapel of the same name. Every first Sunday of the month after May 10th, the church celebrates the passage of the Holy Trinity of Agios Nikolaos from Lefkada in 1087.

Many people flock to Lefakada each year to participate in various water sports. Wouldn’t it be a great detour to check out Agios Nikolaos and chill out at the beach?

Greek island Lefkada home to stunning beaches

Located in the Ionian sea, Lefkada is a stunning island even by Greek standards. It is connected to the mainland by a small bridge and is easily accessible by car.

With hospitable locals and many activities to offer, the island prides itself on having one of the most beautiful natural landscapes and some of the most scenic beaches in Greece.

Lefkada, widely known as the “Caribbean of Greece,” is a recipe for the perfect summer holiday in the Ionian Sea, a perfect dream destination for people who love exotic islands.

The island is justifiably well-known for its beaches. Simply scrolling through photographs of the island’s beaches will fail to reveal their true beauty, for the reality far exceeds any expectations.

With their mesmerizing turquoise waters, surrounded by a pristine natural environment, Lefkada’s beaches will wash your stress away.

However, apart from Sikelianos and the island’s beaches, Lefkada rewards vacationers with seaside villages, including Agios Nikitas and Nidri, as well as other natural features, including the Dimosari Waterfalls, and a number of exciting activities for the adventurous.

Scuba diving, horseback riding, windsurfing, paragliding, flights in prop planes, mountain biking, kite-surfing, sailing around the surrounding islets—there is no end to the outdoor activities from which you can choose on Lefkada.

You can explore the island while staying at luxurious or old fashioned and traditional hotels while, of course, indulging in delicious food at seaside restaurants.

The warm and welcoming town will invite you to take pleasure in its culture by walking its alleyways while listening to folk songs sung by local musicians.

Sustainable tourism on Greece’s beach islets

As tourism grows, the Greek islands, known for their stunning beaches, are increasingly focusing on sustainable practices to preserve their natural beauty. Initiatives include limiting construction to protect coastlines, promoting eco-friendly activities, and encouraging responsible tourism to ensure that these pristine environments remain unspoiled for future visitors.

  • Eco-Friendly Accommodations: Many islands are now offering eco-friendly lodging options that minimize environmental impact while providing luxury and comfort.
  • Conservation Efforts: Local governments and NGOs are working together to protect marine and coastal ecosystems, ensuring that these natural resources are preserved.
  • Sustainable Travel Practices: Visitors are encouraged to adopt sustainable travel habits, such as reducing plastic use and supporting local businesses that prioritize environmental sustainability.
