The tragic loss of George Baldock, a former Sheffield United star who recently played for Panathinaikos, has left the football world in mourning.

The 31-year-old right-back was discovered unresponsive in a pool at his home in Glyfada, a suburb of Athens. At just 31, the right-back’s passing has left fans, teammates, and the broader football community in shock.

His wife, who resides in England with their child, had been trying to reach him throughout the day without success.

Concerned, she contacted the landlord of Baldock’s apartment, who arrived at the property and found the player lifeless at the bottom of the pool.

Emergency services were called at 10:29 p.m. on Wednesday, arriving at the scene shortly after. A doctor from the mobile unit confirmed Baldock’s death, and police were notified to investigate the circumstances. While no external injuries were found on the body, authorities suspect sudden cardiac arrest as the possible cause of death.

George Baldock born in England held Greek nationality

Although born in England, Baldock held Greek nationality due to his Greek ancestry through his grandmother, and represented the Greece national team in international competitions.

He was not included in the squad against England at Wembley for the Nations League clash on Thursday.

Baldock, a dynamic defender, spent seven seasons in Sheffield, where his tenacity and work ethic endeared him to supporters and fellow players alike. From his early days with Milton Keynes Dons to becoming a key figure in Sheffield’s defensive lineup, his rise was a testament to his dedication to the sport.

Panathinaikos FC was shocked by the news. “We are shocked, by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with his family and loved ones,” a statement read.

Sheffield United, where Baldock spent the prime of his career, expressed their deep sorrow in a statement, saying, “Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. He was a beloved figure both on and off the pitch.”

Baldock had recently left Sheffield United during the summer transfer window, a decision that marked the end of a significant chapter for both the player and the club. He had just signed a three-year deal with Panathinaikos, where he was expected to continue his professional journey in Greece. The transfer had excited fans eager to see him showcase his talents in a new league.

George Baldock’s career began in 2010 when he made his debut with Milton Keynes Dons, quickly establishing himself as a defender with promise. His move to Sheffield United in 2017 proved pivotal, as he played a vital role in the team’s promotion to the Premier League and their subsequent seasons in the top flight.
